The Strange World of Jason Crum
A feature length anthology of the work of local filmmaker Jason Crum, who uses elaborate DIY sets and puppets to create epic, miniature fantasy worlds.
How do you create an epic fantasy when your studio is a trailer and your actors made of fake fur and cardboard?
In THE STRANGE WORLD OF JASON CRUM two teddy bears in space suits encounter an ancient monolith on a desert planet. The monolith senses their presence and beams out images of the past to the curious bears.
These images of the past are THE WAY OF GILGAMESH a half-hour retelling of the ancient legend of proud King Gilgamesh and his half-animal friend Enkidu. Their emotional arc shows us how little human psychology has changed in 4000 years.
The monolith then shows us ANDORRA, the story of a little blue creature named Meemo who one day falls into the river and is swept into a world of fantasy and peril. She joins forces with a deposed Forest King and is swept up in the affairs of an empire ruled by a naked chihuahua who has gone mad.
Since 2015 Jason Crum has been creating one-person films under the billing SUMMERLAKE. These films employ found objects, hand-made puppets, and sets created of natural properties (leaves, dirt, rocks). Jason also does all design, post-production, voices, etc. and creates the sound track by mixing commercial elements.
“When I was a kid I made a glider out of two pieces of wood. I didn’t think it would fly but the feeling I had when it soared, did a loop, then banked down to a soft landing on the lawn... That’s what I’m trying to recreate in my filmmaking. I try to make the most entertaining, heartfelt movie that I can. I also feel that the real value of the films lies in any inspiration they give to pursue your own dreams and concepts, just try to keep throwing that glider into the sky.”
