cronenbergs text
“Cronenberg's best movies still have the capacity to cause a sort of Jungian culture shock. They're like Buñuel, or Francis Bacon: wit and trauma, savagery and pity. Within what for most people is a very restrictive genre, Cronenberg has come up with a genuinely original vision. Internal metaphors, external horror.” ― Martin Scorsese
Every film from this family is more than just a movie, they are an experience. They can be terrifying, prescient, cathartic, even romantic, but they all have images that will haunt until the end of days.
With visuals and imagination that are consistently praised, it’s easy to overlook how their films consistently have a career highlight performance from their leads -- Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Walken, Alexander Skarsgård and James Woods have rarely (if ever) been better.
Although some career highlights (such as ExistenZ and Dead Ringers) were not available for theatrical bookings, the selection of films screened represent some of the best obsessions from the family Cronenberg. If you haven’t seen them on the big screen, or are unfamiliar with their big ideas, intelligent concepts and wild imagery, do check them out. You are in for a (frequently messy) treat.
Clive Barker once described American Horror as regular people combating external forces, while this series of films confirm that for these two Canadians, the horror is internal. We’ve traced the call, and it’s coming from inside the host.
The Art House proudly presents this eleven-film series from the Canadian horror masters, running now through early December. Showtimes and advance tickets available below.
